Communispond uses Word styles, rather than manual formatting, in our program materials. This makes it easier and faster for authors to format documents. Also, if we need to change the look of a document, we can quickly change the styles globally.

Communispond's Word styles are custom-built. Their names begin with a number to differentiate them from standard Word styles. For example, 01 Topic Title is a custom style and Header 1 is a standard style.

Viewing Styles

In Microsoft Word, you can view document styles in two ways:

  • From the Style Gallery. To see the Style Gallery:
    • Open the ribbon.
    • Select the Home tab (1).
    • Find the Styles group (2).
  • From the Styles pane. To see the Styles pane:
    • In the ribbon, on the Home tab, in the Styles group, select the expand icon.
    • The Styles pane will open on the right side of the screen.

The Style Gallery does not show all avaialable styles; The Styles pane shows all availabe styles. To add a style to the Style Gallery, right-click on the desired style in the Styles page and select Add to Style Gallery. To remove a style from the Styles Gallery, right-click on style in the Style Gallery and select Remove from Style Gallery.

Applying Document Styles

To apply a style to a paragraph:

  1. In the document, move your cursor to the paragraph to which you want to apply a style. You don't need to select the entire paragraph.
  2. In either the Style Gallery or the Styles pane, select the desired style.
  3. Notice that the desired style was applied to the paragraph.
